The festive season has finally arrived at Oxford Street! The switch-on event ‘The Magic of Christmas’ was held in partnership with the NSPCC and Sky Cinema, and has officially marked the start of the street’s Christmas shopping season.

The festive illuminations were lit up on 7th of November, meaning shoppers will have almost 7 weeks to enjoy them before Christmas Day.

Now in its 58th year of celebrations, a magical 750,000 LED bulbs sprung to life casting a festive glow over the capitals’ retail hotspot. With many of the stores offering discounts, freebies, in-store customisation, complimentary gift-wrapping and festive treats in celebration of the switch-on, visitors were encouraged to arrive before the 5:30pm start time.

Singer, actress and the event’s headline act Rita Ora joined the long list of celebrities that have transformed the street with the push of a button. Accompanied by last year’s X Factor winner Matt Terry and 5 After Midnight who also found fame on the show.

The acts performed live throughout the evening, while Capital Breakfast’s Roman Kemp and Vick Hope hosted the event.

At the 6:15pm switch-on, steam blew out the sides of the stage and lights beamed on every nearby building, creating a twinkly feast for the eyes. ‘Snap-happy’ visitors could post selfies on social using the hashtag #oxstlightson for the chance to see their faces on the big screens and win Oxford Street gift vouchers.

NSPCC gold pin badges were available to buy at John Lewis, Marks and Spencer and Primark, in aid of the charity’s ‘Light Up Christmas for Children’ campaign. Which will raise vital funds for the Childline’s 24/7 counselling service.
